Description
This item is a pair of antique Japanese black and gold stirrups (Abumi) used among samurai. This type of stirrups is called fukuro abumi or musashi abumi, which have a swan-like shape and cover the rider's entire feet. They are made of iron, inlaid with silver, and covered with lacquer for durability. How do we know it's antique? Mon (Japanese emblems used to decorate and identify a family) tells us that the stirrups once belonged to Nabeshima clan, the clan that ruled the Saga region from the late Sengoku period to the Edo period. It was the clan that spread Western science in Japan, resulting in Saga's strong military power during late Edo period.
This pair of stirrups is one of the masterpiece that has ever come to our hands. An avid Japanese antique collector shouldn't miss it for the world!
