Description
3.5 inches high, 6.5 inches wide. This etrog box is cast and hand-chased in the highest quality. While the lettering and other details such as the lid latch and entire underside are an identical match to other known etrog boxes from pre-war Austria, the rest of the design is apparently unique, in that this box is the only extant example of this design, as no others are known (not in museums, never appeared at auction, etc.).I cannot locate any hallmarks, which is not a surprise, and occasionally this type of etrog box did not have hallmarks impressed anywhere. Shown in the last photo is such an example: an etrog box from the famed Moldovan collection that was on display at a museum in Israel. The description reads "Germany (?) ca. 1900", because of the lack of hallmarks.
Palm trees are found on some Menorahs from Poland and Austria at the turn of the 20th century, as it signifies the Garden of Eden. This etrog box has palm trees as well, and I have never seen a palm tree on any other etrog box. This is the most beautiful antique etrog box I have ever encountered.
