Description
This is a fossil elk skullcap with antlers (Cervus sp. of the deer family Cervidae) that dates to to the late Pleistocene (100,000 to 30,000 years ago). It is an exceptionally well-preserved specimen originating from Nebraska on a private land. The dimensions are 18.25" across the antler main beams and the brow tine antler portions are 9.25" and 9.185" from base to tip, respectively. The skullcap is 7.5" in length from front to back. This fossil mammalian skull specimen is solidly intact. It does not exhibit the fragility sometimes associated with Ice Age specimens discovered in Europe and Asia. Since its procurement at an estate sale in the 1990's, as a precautionary measure and for longevity, the fossil has been consolidated and sealed for preservation and prevention of deterioration of the structural integrity of the specimen. There are no repairs, restoration, filling, or compositing to this fossil elk skullcap and antlers. Images of the fossil were taken under standard studio lighting conditions (flash, ambient, incandescent, fluorescent) and the tiny white areas or small spots on the fossil that appear in some of the photographs are reflections of overhead light source (not discoloration in the fossil).
This wonderful fossil elk skull with excellent and remarkable preservation requires no other preparation for exhibition. It would make a nice addition (or a gift!) to your fossil collection display and a showcase conversation piece. I am downsizing my fossil collection for a family college fund.
