One of the greatest and most influential filmmakers of all time. Known for his reserved, ascetic approach and use of non-professional actors, many of his films, particularly "Diary of a Country Priest" (1951), "Pickpocket" (1959), "The Trial of Joan of Arc" (1962), and "Au Hasard Balthazar" (1966) frequent a great many greatest films of all time lists.
Bresson, along with Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu, and Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer were the subjects of Paul Schrader's key 1972 study of film as spiritual art, "Transcendental Style in Film: Ozu, Bresson, Dreyer."
