I believe this box was made to hold a prayer book. It measures 8" tall x 6" wide x 1 3/4" deep. It is marked on the back: United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Union Made. It does have some wear - please check photos. The hinges and latch are in good, working condition.
