  • Condition: I bought this VINTAGE handcrafted vase about 30 years ago from an very upscale art/craft show in Atlanta. It was made and signed by Robert Cumpston, an artist who was known as "The Weed Pot Man" for his lovely carved wooden pots of which this is one. As an aside, Robt Cumpston died in 2018 and in his later years moved into crating animal sculptures out of discarded metal parts. This "weed pot" is in WONDERFUL condition and looks the same as the day I bought it. Please note that there are some natural cracks in the wood block that it was carved from and incorporating these into the design was intentional. The piece is signed by the artist, Robert Cumpston.

    Description

I acquired this VINTAGE piece about 30 years ago when I visited an upscale Art/Craft show in Atlanta where Robert Cumpston, the artist was exhibiting. In the 80's Cumpston came to be know as "The Weed Pot Man" because of carved pots just like this one.  It is hand carved/hand turned out of an interesting block of wood. The block of wood he used for this had varying sizes of cracks in it. Cracks in wood naturally occur when wood is not kiln dried and is allowed to dry out slowly.  As an aside, later in life Cumpston moved into making animal sculptures out of discarded metal parts. The artist died in 2018.
The piece stands approximately 5" tall and is about 3 1/2" in diameter.  It weighs 1lb 3 ounces so it definitely has some "heft" to it. There is an opening in the top for inserting dried flowers or a branch as I have shown you in my pictures. I do not suggest filling it with water in order to use real flowers as water is never a good combination with wood. It is a highly grained piece of wood and it looks to me like a light stain was applied to further enhance the grain detail. It does not have any sheen on it so if a finish was used it was a matte finish.
The only reason I am selling it is that we are downsizing to a much smaller house. Otherwise I would keep it as it is truly a unique piece. In one of the pictures I show the carved signature of the artist, "R Cumpston".
On the bottom of the piece you will also note in the pictures that I applied a piece of felt in order to protect my table.
