This company was associated with Cornelius Vanderbilt and his desire to find a way to connect the Atlantic and the Pacific for Gold Rush traffic and commerce. The company ran steamers from the Nicaragua route to California, transporting tens of thousands of passengers from New York to San Francisco in the 1860s. In 1868, it merged with the North American Steamship Company.
